How to Make Pets Part of Your Family

Pets and Family

We like to think that the minute we get a pet, he or she becomes an instant part of our family. We envision them going on long trips with us, running up to greet us at the door, and just blending in nicely with our family. Unfortunately, things don’t work that way, especially if you get an older cat or dog.

Many times pets are reluctant to integrate themselves into a family. Sometimes it is because they may have been rescued from a shelter and are unused to being around multiple people, other times it may just be that being reluctant is just a part of their personality.

Regardless of the reason, there are things you and your family can do to help make your pets become a part of your family. The following are some suggestions of things you can do to make your pet a part of your family.

Pets and FamilyTake Time to Interact with Your Pet at Home

In order to become a part of your family, your pet must feel as if they are really wanted and welcome. The best way to do this is to make sure you, and other family members, regularly interact with your pet.

Your interactions with your pet don’t have to be over the top. Some simple things you can do with your pet include:

     • Watching TV or reading a book together
     • Taking a quick walk around the block together
     • Driving around in the car
     • Visiting local pet-friendly events, such as farmer’s markets, block parties, or art walks
     • Spending time together outside either just sitting and relaxing or playing catch

Build Your Pet’s Skills and Confidence Up with Regular Socialization

A happy pet will integrate themselves into your family faster than an unhappy pet. Regular outings focused on socialization with other people and other pets can help keep a family pet happy – both mentally and physically.

Socialization can occur at dog parks, regular city parks, or even at specific outings or events designed to offer opportunities for pets to socialize with others.

It is important to remember that you must take your pet’s comfort level into consideration when socializing. If your pet is uncomfortable or reluctant to be around others, do not force them to take part, as it could actually cause more harm than good.

Regularly Engage in Training Exercises

Regular pet training has been proven to help build strong, solid bonds between pets and their owners. It has also been proven to improve the social skills and mental well-being of the pet. All of these things will prove extremely helpful when trying to make a pet a part of your family.

Pet owners have several options available to them when it comes to training. Those options include:

  • Enrollment in a pet training school that offers regular weekly courses
  • At-home training classes offered by personal pet trainers
  • DIY pet training courses

Pet training is not a ‘one size fits all’ option. Some pets will respond better to certain types of training. Try to figure out which option is right for your pet and start to incorporate it into their daily lives.

Take Your Pet on Vacation with Your Family

Family vacations provide the perfect opportunity to help improve the bond between family members. While improving the bond between family members while on vacation, don’t forget to bring your family pet.

Vacations are no longer a time when pets are left at home.  Thanks to pet-friendly hotels, airlines, parks, and other events, a family can take their pets with them almost anywhere they go; all it takes is a little planning.

Making your pet a part of your family is a task that may take some time. It usually doesn’t happen overnight. Just have patience, be consistent, and before you know it your pet will be just another member of your family.
